Seeing a Chiropractor: Finding Ways to Keep Your Pain Away

Five Ways To Relieve Chronic Migraine Pain

by Carlos Butler

It is estimated that around 28 million Americans suffer with migraine headaches. Migraine pain can be debilitating, and the medications often prescribed can cause drowsiness may be habit-forming.

Five ways to relieve pain and severity of your migraine headaches without medications are:

1.       Visit a chiropractor. If you live with chronic headaches, go see a chiropractor. Stress in your joints, back, and spine can manifest in chronic migraine pain, and often-times, a simple chiropractic adjustment can relieve headache pain. Talk to a chiropractor in your community to learn more.

2.       Think ergonomic. Give your workspace an ergonomic makeover, which can reduce strain and stress that precipitates and causes migraine pain. For instance, make sure that you're not straining to see a computer screen and check your chair to ensure it has proper lumbar support.

3.       Keep some oil nearby. It never hurts to keep a little aromatherapy nearby. Tuck a small bottle of peppermint, lavender, or rosemary essential oil in your pocket and have a sniff when you feel a headache coming on.

4.       Relieve stress. Since stress is typically the root-cause of a chronic headache, take time to meditate or pray to help relieve the pain. This involves a quiet space and a few minutes to sit and focus on your breathing; dim the lights in the room to help calm and relax.

5.       Change your diet. Some simple changes to your diet can have a significant impact on the frequency of your headaches – and can curb the pain when a migraine kicks in. Just as certain foods may cause headache pain, there are also some  foods and drinks that help alleviate migraine pain:

-          Turkey contains a chemical Tryptophan which is what makes you feel sleepy after eating it and stimulates serotonin, which induces feelings of well-being.

-          Nuts contain Salicin, which is a natural pain-blocking compound.

-          A little bit of caffeine could dramatically reduce the severity of your headache. Be careful, however, not to drink too much coffee or soda or it may have the opposite effect.

-          Grape juice is also a natural pain reliever. Try it!

-          Ginger root eases nausea and reduces inflammation. Chew on a piece of root for fast relief.

Chronic migraines warrant the treatment and care of a doctor or healthcare professional. They may prescribe medications or herbal supplements that can reduce the severity and frequency of your headaches.
