Seeing a Chiropractor: Finding Ways to Keep Your Pain Away

Herniated Disc Treatment Options Between A Doctor And A Chiropractor

by Carlos Butler

If you are having back problems, you may be trying to decide between a chiropractor and a doctor. Below are the kind of treatment you will likely receive from each, so you can make the decision on what is right for you.

Doctor and Herniated Disc

Your back pain could be due to a herniated disc, which is when your lumber spine puts pressure on the sciatica nerve, which is a  large tendon that runs across your lower back. If you have this problem, you may not be able to stand up straight, and have relief when you bend over and sleep in the fetal position. This is because when you are bent over, the herniated disc does not touch this sciatica nerve.

The doctor may prescribe pain medication, and send you to a physical therapist before they will consider surgery. Besides providing you with therapy, the physical therapist will show you exercises you can do at home to strengthen up your back muscles.

Chiropractor and Herniated Disc

A chiropractor will treat your herniated disc problem without using any type of medication or surgery. He or she will do a physical exam on you to make sure you do not have other issues with your back.

The chiropractor will also make sure you can stand and sit straight. If he or she sees that you have problems doing this,  the chiropractor may do an MRI on your back or take an x-ray to make sure you have a herniated disc

This examination helps the chiropractor develop the best treatment plan for you when treating a herniated disc problem. In some cases, he or she may suggest a doctor if you have problems like:

  • Loss of reflex
  • Loss of strength
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Loss of sensation in the back

If the chiropractor decides to treat your herniated disc, one treatment the doctor may do is spinal manipulation to help ease your pain. This will help to release the pressure from the spine is putting on the large tendon. He or she will go over other treatment options you have.

Both a chiropractor (such as one from Reinecke Chiropractor) and a doctor will work well for you in treating your back pain from a herniated disc problem. If you do not mind taking pain medication to help with your pain, a doctor may be a good choice, but if you want to try a more hands on natural approach try a chiropractor first.
